IUD Use in Turkey

IUD use is now the most widely used modern contraceptive method in Turkey. In 1998, 25 percent of exposed women stated IUD use as their current method. Using the 1998 Turkish Demographic and Health Survey, this paper examines the likelihood of not using any contraception, using traditional methods, and using other modern methods as compared to IUD use. Non-contraceptive users are more likely to live in the less developed regions than IUD users, but traditional users are less likely to live in the less developed East than the developed West. There are no significant differences between the two different regions when comparing the use of other modern methods to IUD use. Family planning programs in Turkey have been focused towards providing women in the less developed with little to no education with more advanced methods of contraceptive use, such as the IUD.
